"I want to practice Karate" |
— Ji Yeonwoo in Episode 61 |
Yeonwoo Ji (지연우, Ji Yeonwoo) is a supporting character of How to Fight/Viral Hit.
Appearance[]
Ji Yeonwoo is a tall young man with a nerdy demeanour. He has short dark brown hair with parted bangs, brown eyes and thick eyebrows. He is mainly seen wearing school clothing, which includes a sleeveless jumper, a white dress shirt, yellow, red and purple striped tie, dark blue trousers, and circular glasses. He has gained a large female fan following mainly because of his appearance.
A glimpse of his body is seen, which is muscular with broad shoulders, a defined chest and abs [1]. Parts of his body are covered in bruises, and he has calloused knuckles as a result of Kyokushin training.
Personality[]
Ji Yeonwoo's personality is a mystery at first. When appearing in his debut, chapter 48, he is polite and has no malicious intent within his voice. He was simply just following what his other coworkers were doing, however the more important to thing to note is that he was talking to his father, which turns out to be a repeated action for Yeonwoo. The reason being is that a major personality trait of his is letting every aspect of his life be controlled by others, especially his father.
However, Yeonwoo does not have a typical nerd's personality. He has shown to be courageous and brave when it came to standing up and protecting his classmate and her friends from three thugs and had shown no fear at all. He showed anger when Taehoon started beating up his friends. Yeonwoo also expresses denial and anger whenever he was questioned of his control over his life and his "freedom".
Yeonwoo has a passive stance and does things primarily for the sake of others, ignoring his own desires to the point of forgetting what he wants. He is protective of others and always tries to avoid conflict because of his peaceful nature. He is also kind-hearted, volunteering his leisure taking care of the elderly at the nursing home and having conversations with them. The only time he shows a desire for something, is because of his love for Karate.
History[]
Yeonwoo is the son of a high-ranking government official in South Korea, so since young, he was expected to act a certain way. Ever since he was a child, he was forced to become a "studying doll", having to go to after-school academies and then getting locked in a tiny room to study more. This routine continued up until his second year of high school.
When he was young, Yeonwoo found a thing which he enjoyed doing, which was Kyokushin Karate. While his father allowed him to take Karate classes, he didn't like it and wanted his son to not get distracted from studying. He crafted a detailed schedule for each day of the week, counting the activities and hours they would take. Despite not having enough free time with his incredibly cramped schedule, Yeonwoo still found time for Karate and even took hours off his sleep so he could continue practicing it.
Yeonwoo's father became familiar with Baek Seongjun, and almost ended up signing a licensing deal with him. This made him come up with the idea of making his son join Seongjun's company so he could monitor him better through NewTube. Yeonwoo gained a following of 1.5 million subscribers because of his good looks, and continued streaming. All of his streams had the same repetitive set up; him studying inside a tiny room. His viewers noted that he would sometimes mute the stream, saying that his father would be there whenever he was stuck on a problem.
Yeonwoo was stuck on the same repetitive pattern of having his life monitored by his father and keeping up with his study-obsessed persona, until he had his views challenged by Seong Taehoon, who kept provoking him and questioning the control he had over his life. Yeonwoo had been brainwashed to the point of complete lack of self awareness, not even realizing that none of the things he was doing were for himself, until Taehoon made him realize that. For once, Yeonwoo decided to fight back instead of letting let himself get hit. He puts up a good fight but eventually loses to Taehoon who is more experienced. After this eye-opening experience, he decides to quit NewTube and tells his father that he wants to stop studying and just be a normal person, despite his expected disapproval.
Fighting Prowess[]
Style Breakdown[]
Yeonwoo has a black belt in Kyokushin, which is considered the hardest Karate style. Deservedly so, practitioners of this style undergo very harsh training, such as sparring and hitting hard objects with no protection, taking blows in order to condition their bodies, and often training in extreme conditions. We can see signs of Yeonwoo having gone through those training methods, such as his conditioned knuckles and the bruises on his body. Before he was shown fighting back, he was depicted having very strong endurance and physical durability, being able to withstand hits with little to no pain because of his conditioning. Instead, the person hitting him would be the one in pain.
When seen fighting, Yeonwoo mainly uses two stances, the Forward stance, where the weight is mostly on the front foot, and Shiko Dachi, where the weight is balanced and grounded. He seems to have a lowered centre of gravity, sinking his weight into his stance. His style heavily relies on balance and aggressiveness, the low center of gravity makes him harder to knock over. He uses a type of footwork in Karate, where he leads with his hips, but doesn't lean in any direction. When doing a kick, he doesn't retract it, but drops his foot straight down. By keeping his legs in front, he can attack continuously. Because of this, Yeonwoo's footwork is not very quick and fluid compared to Taehoon, who practices Taekwondo.
From what has been shown so far, It seems that Yeonwoo prefers using punches, showing a very powerful straight, with which he was able to even damage a wall, without ending up with a serious fracture. This indicates that Yeonwoo takes body conditioning very seriously. A usual practice of Kyokushin is punching hard objects with bare hands, which creates micro-fractures that create stronger bone tissue when they heal. In Kyokushin, punches to the head are not permitted due to them being too devastating in competition, but Yeonwoo uses them in a street fight. Despite not using them much, he also has used kicks, which seemed powerful, as he made Taehoon wince in pain while they fought. He was able to pull off the Rolling Thunder, a kick iconic to Kyokushin.
